Summer Ministries

 Summer UMC Ministries  2018

      ~ South End ~ Mt.Pisgah ~

1)  Summer Food Program  (June 5 -  July 25, excepting Wed July 4)

In the summer of 2013, we initiated this program to work alongside our church garden so as to offer a weekly food supplement to  families in our immediate neighborhood who would probably have difficulty feeding their children during the summer
Staff and teachers at Norman Binkley Elementary and Tusculum Elementary Schools identify the families who they estimate to be in greatest need of food supplement over the summer recess.  They communicate with each family in their own language and send them directions of how and when to work with us. This year we are taking referrals for families from the       St. Thomas Health Center on Edmondson Pike.
We use funds from our congregational budget as well as  monetary gifts from individuals and other sources, including past gifts from Creivewood UMC,  Forest Hills UMC and Mt.Pisgah UMC in order to purchase food from Second Harvest Food Bank.
Families in our congregation also take one of the weeks and donate the needed amounts of canned fruit.
Each week of the summer we distribute food in relation to family size each week:  rice, dried beans, milk, canned fruit, canned veggies, frozen chicken, and a variety of cereals and fresh produce and sometimes eggs or dairy products as available.
In addition to our Second Harvest food source, significant amounts of fresh produce is given to these families from our church garden.
It is wonderful to have members from Mt. Pisgah UMC to volunteer with our members in the weekly distribution of the food!
This summer (2017) we served 81 different families through out the summer, with an average of 35-40 families coming per week to pick up the food.  This translated to making supplemental healthy food available to over 450 of our neighbors!

The weekly distribution times are –

Tuesday evenings (5:00—7:00 pm) and Wednesday mornings (10 am – 12 noon).

We welcome your participation by means of ---
1) monetary donations
2) volunteers to pick up the food from Second Harvest Food Bank on any of the Monday afternoons
3) volunteers to staff the distribution sessions on any of the Tuesday evenings and/or Wednesday mornings
